This may seem a silly question, but if one is using a power tool on an extension lead does the RCD need to go on the end of the extension lead or on the wall socket in the house, or doesn't it matter?

If you put it on the end of the extension lead then it will only protect the tool plugged into it, if you plug it into the socket outlet in the house then it will protect the extension lead and the tool. So as scarypants said, plug it into the house socket outlet.
