Hi

I've run a 25 metre length of 6.0mm 6943X 3 core SWA Steel Armoured Cable from my CU in the house (under the stairs) to my shed. I plan to run a lighting circuit; ring circuit; and a single dedicated 32 amp mcb for my compressor in the shed.

I've read of difficulties people have when buying a cheap CU and using it with SWA as they're too small / tight / poorly designed etc. So is there any particular one you would recommend to me? Primarily for ease of use / fitting though obviously value for money is important too :D

I'm thinking metalclad MK.

Then I can use one of their motor MCB's for my compressor:

One thing that puts me off is the price of their RCD's at around £40. But maybe I'm being tight?

I will be doing the shed end of things, but I have a local electrician who I will be getting to connect it to the CU in the house. I have run the cable to it but not connected anything at that end (it's a Siemens board). When I've had the chap round previously he's checked my CU in the house and said it's suitable for what I'm planning.

thanks for any thoughts

if you plan to run a lighting circuit at 6A
a ring final at 32A
and an additional circuit at 32A
your cable is potentially to small.
what breaker size are you protecting this with?

the electrician told me to buy a 32amp one for the house, which I have done. (I had trouble finding a Siemens one!). The compressor doesn't actually pull anything like 32amp but it's meant to be run from a 32 amp supply. According to the instruction booklet (looking at it now) it says the 'suggested fuse' is 30amp for my model. It is a 2.2kw motor.

This is the compressor

edit I rarely use the compressor if that makes a difference!

I've never had any problem with the small Wylex metalclad units. To be honest, the vast majority of metal DBs, even those with only a few ways, are more generous with space than their plastic counterparts. If worst comes to worst, you can always gland into an adaptable box and bush it onto the DB to free up some space.
