On the same food theme as recently. What has happened to radishes. They used to be fiery and peppery but now they are just a tasteless watery crunch. So can anyone recommend where I can buy "proper ones"

I've not had one since the 1970s!

They definitely used to have a kick.

Grow your own! Really easy to grow. I'm growing 'French breakfast' ones at the moment which are about medium strength but if you want heat, get some Black Spanish ones. In fact, I’ve just ordered some. Only a few quid off eBay for about 500 seeds!

They scared people. Nothing is allowed to have flavour any more.

A couple of years ago I heard some tw.t on the radio saying how they'd managed to create a new variety of beetroot which didn't taste earthy,

FGS they are supposed to taste like that.

I would like it though if it wouldn’t stain my boiled egg

You could always add some flavour of your choice to roasted parsnips: honey, pepper, chilli, etc.

They look quite nice, IMO

If you have an Indian store nearby, you might be able to pick up some mooli radish

They are white and about parsnip sized (or larger). Taste wise, they remind me of the radishes that I ate as a kid.

In the meantime, I want to find someone who sells the stringy celery.

They all do. Or did until people started meddling with them to remove a defining characteristic.

Harvested my first ones today. Feck me they are hot! Must be a cross between a radish and a chilli!
