Redundant tanks in loft x2

The house i am in now has had combi boiler fitted before purchasing.Clearing the loft today and found that 2 big metal boxes(very heavy) filled with newspaper and junk.

Are these any good for future use or just junk.How do you get them out of loft hatch as they seem bloody heavy and big.I have a 9" grinder if that helps,but not intending to create fire.

They are junk really, and are likely to have quite a bit of dried rusty sediment in the bottom. They will be made from galvanised steel, and one tank will be much bigger than the other.
Usually they are left up there, due to the issues you find - the biggest one being the fire risk from the grinder sparks!

Can i do my bit to save the earth by recycling it.Any tips except using grinder.

Its really a bit tough to use any other tool, except maybe a jigsaw with a fine metal cutting blade.
I have done this myself but I had a water soaked sheet to hand, and directed the grinder sparks into that....you can also minimise things by using a 1mm slitting disc and cutting from the inside so the sparks also head inside.
Whatever you do, give yourself time to do a 'fire watch' for some time after the job is done.

If you can get them out in one bit they make great allotment /garden storage boxes clean off loose rust paint with hammerite and make up a hinged lid covered in roofing felt last for ever!

The small one should go through the loft hatch if its the standard heating header tank. I would buy some 4" X2"s lay across a few joist, pack the gap with glass fibre then turn the big tank on its side and sit it on on the new joists. You have just got a nice storage area (in and on) and a decent amount of insulation under it.
