Hi,

I`m thinking to refurb my 1930`s stair. I removed the carpet and started sanding down the old paint. It coming out ok. I will need to fill down some hole but overall seems very good and strong timber.

Can anyone suggest what product like stain and oil to use and what would be the process to apply for a good result?

Thinking to paint riser in white and tread in oak or similar finish

Thanks

I recently worked in a house that has white risers (water based eggshell) and LVT treads. People walking up and down the stairs tend to hit them with their shoes and leave dark marks...

People shouldn't walk on that stair with shoes

Not sure if you mean your stairs or my customer's.

Are you planning to have a stair runner again or not? If not, I am not sure that you will be able to do anything about the slightly darker area where the old stair runner was. If you are going for a dark oak, it might not be a problem though.

Osmo make an antislip oil coating for stairs.

I believe it is only available in clear though. It might be the case that you can use one of their tinted coats first, or use spirit based stain first. I would recommend that you email then for advice. Great products, but not cheap.

I reckon it would have originally been painted from day one, it's just knotty softwood.

I'd just paint and carpet it, keep life simple (and safe).

I mean my stair. If your customer want use with shoes nobody can stope them :)

Shall I use some stain first to make the colour a bit more uniform?

There are products that you can use to lighten the sections that were previously covered (historically) by the carpet runner. I don't have first hand experience of such products though. Over the years, I have have found Smith and Rodgers to have a great tech team
