Register plate question

Hello!

I've used the forum before when reading other threads, but now I've signed up, so... hi there.

This strictly isn't DIY, but it may become so...

I have just had a wood burning stove installed. The installer also fitted a register plate, as I expected. A flue liner has also been installed. However, while one side of the register plate fits nice and snugly into the brick pier, on the other side, there is a gap between the edge of the plate and the brickwork big enough for me to put a finger up! I wasn't expecting this. Does this sound normal, or should the register plate be fitted tight? I just wanted to check this out before standing up to the installer.

Thanks,
Jonathan

So long as you have a chimney liner installed and it is connected correctly to the flue pipe, the register plate just prevents debris from falling down the chimney and on to your hearth.
It is also necessary for the liner to be sealed with cement at the top, of course.
Ideally, the gap between the liner and the original chimney should be filled with vermiculite, but this is rarely done.
If no liner is fitted, the register plate should be sealed, of course.
John :)
