Hello,

This is my first post. I guess it will be followed up with a few more in the near future.

My Plan is to Increase the opening of the Kitcken/Dining room doorway to Approx 2.4m.I have inserted 2 pictures to help explain what im doing.

I have contacted my local building control and they have emailed me back saying that I can "insert a standard 178x102 steel beam that will be satisfactory" and once this is done to contact them to come and check all is correct.

I will be doing the work myself so I just wanted to get as much advice as possible to try to avoid any issues once BC turn up to inspect things. I am happy with the method of supporting the load with Props whilst the Wall is removed but a few things are still a mistery...

My Questions are,

Is it correct that I can just use a standard Steel as stated by BC and not need Calcs from a SE?
How much bearing length do i need on each end?
The steel will be sitting on single brick width each end so will a pad stone be required and if so what size or is there a standard?

Any advice would be great or if any body can see an obvious problem with what i plan please point it out.

Cheers Guys....Please go easy on me.

If a 178 x 102 is what they say, then use that. Calcs would not really be necessary on that span and with domestic loading.
Have a 100mm minimum bearing each end. 215 wide pads should be OK if it's brickwork.
