Iron over tissue with brown paper on top.
Why not use a plastic scraper or a clump of soft wood as a makeshift scraper? Any excess left over, use a hair-direr and a cloth.
Foxhole's suggestion will work but might damage french polish if the iron is too hot.

Have used paint stripper on wax and found it very effective , but messy , scrapes up easily but needs cleaning with white spirit.
