Hi,
I am looking to replace a few of the spindles on my banister as one of my hounds has eaten them considerably.
My house is a 6 year old Barratt standard box. the Newal posts have caps which I presume covers the bolts that secures the handrail.
Would I be right in thinking that if I unscrew that bolt the hand rail would lift off?
Would there be anything else holding it on?
Thanks for your time in looking.

If you cut a spindle in half and take it out you will see it is sat in a channel cut into the bottom rail and a channel under the handrail. The spindles are held in place with small spacer pieces fixed at either side of the spindles.
Thats about the simplest way i can explain it, take one out and it will become simple to see. Then just buy some new spindles the same size and filler pieces (B&Q etc) cut and fit..

That makes perfect sense.
I'm going to do that right now and see how it goes. Thanks for your help.

Well start of the job done. Spindle sawn in two and then removed with some wiggling.
Theyre well pinned in with 5 pins top and bottom.
Now I can cut the spindles I have bought to size and put them in.
Thanks John for your help as I would have spent hours trying to take the handrail off!
