Hi, i am boarding my loft... and the rafters are 'tied' together by lengths of timber.... but if i'm boarding the floor, can i remove the original timbers the builders put in on the floor to keep the joist equidistant?

thanks
d

no.

you cannot remove a ceiling binder unless you replace it with something else that will do the same job.

its job is to lend support and to stiffen the joists.

how substantial are the timbers!!!
if they are greater than say 4x2" and have other timbers attached to then they may be supporting the ceiling or transferring loads from one point to another !!!

they are just ties, 4 x 1, and i'm replacing them with the chipboard floor?

Post a pic and we'll have a look, ply sheets might do the same job. Chipboard is gash.
