We have an old socket in the spare bedroom which an electrician told us not to use. For some reason he did not remove it (probably for cost reasons 10 years ago). What's the best way of getting rid of it now and making things safe?

The best way is to call the electrician back, but if you mean diy you need to know if it is a spur or part of the ring main & if you are planning to leave the back box in situ or you want a flush wall. Insulating the cable(s) & fitting a blanking plate is the easiest & quickest way,so that you do not have to remove them, but you must connect them as they were in the socket if part of the ring main so as not to break the circuit. If you intend to plaster the hole up then you need to remove the cables, or remove the supply from them, as you cannot leave live cables hidden in the wall.

do you remember if he told you why you shouldn't be using it. Faults should be fixed not ignored!!!!!!!!!!!!!

what type of socket is this?

how many cables are there?

where do those cables go?

what circuit is it on?
