I have to ask, as you haven't included a picture of inside the socket with four cables:
Are all four cables wired directly to that socket, or are some in connectors?
The figure of 8 situation is a crazy way to wire this up, unless your electrician was more of a 'handy'man type.

^^^ what he said. Its quite normal to extend a ring by taking the two ends of the extension section to an existing socket, but rather than connecting all four to the back of the socket which would create and undesireable figure of eight, you crimp one of the new legs to one of the existing, then take the remaining legs, one old and one new to the back of the socket
