render my bathroom or dot and dab?

i have just removed the crumbling old render from my bathroom walls.
i want to tile it as im going to fit a new bathroom suite.
now would i be better rendering the walls and tiling onto that, or should i dot and dab standard plasterboard to the walls and tile onto that?
any advice on what would be better?
