Hello,
I’d appreciate some advice on repairing render on a garden wall.
I’ve removed most of the loose, hollow-sounding and cracked render, exposing the scratch coat beneath. My original plan was to remove all of the scratch coat and start again from the masonry, but the remaining material is proving extremely difficult to remove, suggesting it is still well bonded.
Given the relatively small area, I’m considering doing the repair myself. My proposed approach is:
Remove any remaining loose or poorly bonded render with chisel, wire brush and finally remove dust with a brush..
Apply a bonding agent (e.g. SBR) to the sound render and exposed masonry.
Fill deeper areas with a sand-and-cement scratch coat, leaving sufficient depth for the finish coat. Allow the scratch coat to cure.
Apply a finish coat and sponge-float to match the surrounding texture.
Does this sound like a sensible approach? In particular, is it acceptable to leave the well-bonded scratch coat in place, or would it be better practice to remove everything back to the masonry before re-rendering?
Any advice on mix ratios, curing times or preparation methods would be much appreciated.
Thanks
