Someones snapped a spindle on the stairs, no ones owning up to it.
Snap is at the thinest part it the spindle and is a clean break that cannot be seen when put back together.

What's the best glue to usefor strength and one that won't make a mess?

glues dont make a mess putting on to much does :D

make shure there is no loose strands to get in the way glue with evostic or simmilar wood glue wipe off excess bind tightly with tape

i am assuming the split is virtualy vertical covering several inches

if the break is raggid and virtualy horizontal you will be better with a new spindle as it will not hold it may with a dowel but still be very weak

i have just started using polyurethane glue screwfix sell it it sets hard in 30 mins and it is stronger than woodworking pva it foams up slightly while drying but this can be removed with your fingernails and doesnt appear to mark surrounding surfaces you can slightly moisten timber to speed up setting time and make a stronger bond but it would be worth a try
