replace cooker hood 20w halogen g4 bulbs with led

Hi.
This is a bit of an experiment, but I've swapped a the 12v halogen g4 capsules on my cooker hood for some led capsules. I thought they'd be a straight swap, but apparently not . The LEDs are 12v ac, and just flicker on and off about every second.
I was interested to understand what is going on? Any thoughts?

Either the LEDs need a proper driver, so the power supply for the halogens is not suitable, or the load of the LEDs is too small for it.
