we are replacing our kitchen mixer tap (to be fitted by a plumber friend on Saturday). I want to buy the correct size. What measurements should I look for? Am I right in thinking I should assess the pipe connection and if the old taps are longer than the new ones I will need a shank adapter?

I want to have the tap ready for fitting when the plumber arrives. Thanks

Make sure your chosen tap is suitable for the hot water system you have.

If you have a conventional gravity system (cold tanks in the loft, and a hot water cylinder) your choice will be limited to those suitable for low pressures (usually about 0.5 Bar).

If you have a high pressure hot water system (combi boiler or megaflow cylinder etc.) you may have more choice.

Fit a high pressure tap on a low pressure system, and it could take a fortnight to fill the sink.

The cold is (or should be) fed directly from the mains, so that isn't usually a problem.
