My cast iron manhole cover is broken I've bought a new one the same size but the corners are more rounded. How do I go about removing the old frame and putting in the new one?
Without being to simplistic you just need to break it out, take off the cover, get a chisel/bolster and bash it (with a hammer) from inside, under the old frame and work it all the way round til loose, clean off any old mortar and relay on 3:1 sand cement mix, jobs a good'un!
Chop out around existing frame with a hammer and bolster, (eye protection advised!). From inside carefully chisel the mortar bedding the frame, until enough is removed to lift frame off the masonry. Suitable care must be taken to prevent any debris going into the sewer! Clean as much mortar off the masonry as possible.
Bed new frame on fresh mortar, use a level or straight edge to align with surrounding area if need be. Smooth off internally, make good around externally as required. If you have a new cover with a plastic frame its best to put the cover in whilst mortar is still wet, these frames can distort and you may find the cover wont fit when the mortar has gone off.
