I have 2 x celing lights in my kitchen, each seperatly controlled by 1 twin switch unit. I am replacing the white plastic switch with a metal finish unit. The original switch has 2 x twin/earth cables connected as follows:

Top row C - Red
3 - not connected
2 - black

Bottom row C - Red 240v + loop to position 2
3 - not connected

2 x earth connected to box

Replacement Switch

Top L & L

Bottom L1 / L2 & L1 / L2

How do I connect the replacement switch unit & do I need to earth the switch to the box?

Red to L
Black to L1
(black needs to be sleeved with red/brown to show its live and not neutral)
Same process for the other side of the switch.

Yes metal accessories need to be earthed.

Don't think of the terminals as 'top row' and 'bottom row'

The switch is split vertically in two halves like this:

It will make more sense if you look at it properly.

PS Most makers use C, L1 and L2
some use L for common plus L1 and L2
to confuse you more, one maker denotes the terminals L1, L2 and L3
