Be prepared for a possibly stupid question from a plumbing novice...

I need to replace the basin taps in the bathroom as the top of one of them has sheared off!!!

1. Are the connections for basin taps standard i.e length and width?
2. Do I just unscrew the nut under the back of the sink using a tap spanner (suggestions as to best type would be welcomed).
3. any other tools I need?

Thanks in advance.

1) Isolate water supply
2) Use an adjustable tap wrench to undo the tap connector
3) Buy or borrow a box spanner to undo the backing nut after hoiking the water supply pipe out of the way
5) Replace in reverse order using a new fibre washer
6) Turn water back on
7) Check for leaks, swear blind they're nothing to do with you, tear hair out etc

Or you can use a tap conversion kit (alot easier for a novice) where by you only change the body of the tap.

p.s. they are not all the same length in the tails. However you can get a flexible tap connector with a built in service valve and a white metal braided cover.

they do restrict the flow a bit but make changing and repairing taps a lot easier.
