WITH THE POWER OFF disconnect the two cables at the double socket. with a continuity tester check there is continuity between
live and live
neutral and neutral
earth and earth
if there is continuity between these you can proceed with the work.
if there is enough slack on the cable you can put one cable in one side of the dual box, the other cable the other side the box. run a short length of the same size cable between. fit accessories as required. earth box if metal as well.
if there is no slack on the cables (most likely!) put them in one side of box, and run a short length of the same size cable to the other side. a spur in other words. from a wiring point of view it's easier to have the three cables at the single socket. earth box if metal as well.
if after the continuity test you find it is not a ring further investigation will be required.
