Hi, new to this forum.

we recently moved to a house and among other things, we've found our electrolux gas oven (fitted) isn't working. we'd like to replace it with an electric one as we have a toddler and a baby and we don't like the idea of an open flame within easy reach.

How easy is it to replace a gas oven with an electric one?

Also, what do I need to consider regarding the size, how specific do I need to be when buying one?

Thanks in advance for any advice

The first question is are you replacing the current equipment with an hob & oven or just an oven?

Generally speaking ovens should be on their own circuit if their rating is above 2kw. 4 plate electric hobs likewise.

You will need to establish what electrical circuits are currently in place. Is there a cooker switch on the wall? Does the current fuse box (consumer unit) indicate that there is a cooker circuit?

If not then you should probably get an electrician in to advise you on the best method to connect your hob/oven to the supply. This will mean checking that your current consumer unit has sufficient space to house an additional RCD protected circuit. 6mm or 10mm cable will have to be run from the consumer unit to a cooker switch at or near the position where the cooker is. Additional cable will run from this either directly to the hob/oven or to a cooker connection unit and then to the hob/oven.

The size and type of oven is more about personal choice and the needs of your family.

sorry forgot to say, that it's just the oven, not the hob

thanks for the advice. I've got to get an electrician in for another job anyway, so I'll ask his advice.

How on earth does an oven flame ever get within easy reach of a toddler or a baby who is being properly cared for?

And do you really think that if either of them stuck their hand into a hot electric oven it wouldn't do just as much harm as a hot gas one?
