Replacing Halogen MR16 bulbs

Thanks once again. Glad I didn't rush into this and now have a much better understanding.

The only thing I am not 100% clear on, is why that red live is just terminated into that connector block and doesn't seem to be connected to anything?
 
It's hard to say by your pictures, as I cannot determine whether both are twin and earth or one is single core and earth?
But likelihood is there was single and earth required and the installer only had twin and earth, so botched it up like that.
Is the spare core live?
