Replacing my Thorn M56/76 boiler.

It's a difficult choice to make....stick with an older boiler that on paper is not particularly efficient but is normally very reliable or get a new boiler and loose:

say £2000 capital cost of the installation

lost interest

servicing costs (you must have proper servicing carried out on condensing boilers)

breakdowns etc.

Given that many installations are of poor quality, most boilers are of dubius design and quality, manufacturers warranties are often worthless, parts are extortionate, very few installers have the knowledge to repair the latest boilers, then the potential gas savings (often exagerated) will not cover the outlay.

Overall I defy any customers to prove they have saved money after everything is taken into account. Perhaps on very large properties owners may gain.

And don't go on about saving the planet, The cost to the environment of producing boat loads of spares to keep the bean cans working, added to the legions of service engineers driving around 24/7 polluting the atmosphere, you are all being conned big time.

It's all about maximising profits, the cost of the spares prove it without a shadow of a doubt, they are made to fail !!!

BG quote for a baxi boiler say £3000.00, if you want a same size Worcester their quote is a grand more  less long term profit perhaps.

Namsag I never said the Worcesters were any better but the Vaillant build quality is far superior in my opinion and can you remember the Baxi Bahama combi? In all my years I've not met many disgruntled Vaillant customers and I can't say the same about Poxi. Aren't Baxi suffering a financial meltdown at the moment?

Baxi used to be one of the best boilers around, if the go under and take Potty with them, good.

Isn't it Vaillant that had/has problems with bits melting, assume sorted now.

The melted seals are all sorted now but luckily no one was ever injured. (unlike the FATAL POXI powermax range)

Dangermouse why mention the bahama when we are talking about the 105 everyone knows the bahama was a pile of sh#te but by the same token we could talk about the 551/552/511/382/401 which were probably the best most reliable boilers ever made.
But there is no point talking about other boilers within a manufacturers range as they are not the boilers in question.

As for the case seal problem with vaillants no one has come to grief YET do you think every boiler has been visited.

Don`t kid yourself national recalls get all appliances they miss out hundreds if not thousands of appliances . I personally have been involved in national recalls involving vaillant 242,baxi solo 3 and cannon coalridge exploding fires in the county you live in and neighbouring ones and i stll come accross them ten years on that have never been done

There has been one incident that resulted in fatality with the powermax , is this down to the boiler or BG bad training and work practises. That has still yet to be decided

I see your points and everyones entitled to their opinion (although back boiler design is very basic and mechanically there's not much to go wrong. ) I also agree Baxi made the best back boilers but as these are now out of production what does that leave them with? . I have set up a poll for everyone to have a vote on which should (hopefully) settle the argument. . . .

Why do I get the impression this could be the most one sided poll since polls began

and where is said poll so we can all vote?....in a completely fair and above board manner of course.

So far Vaillant are miles ahead in the poll. (hardly surprising. . . .)

Baxi still produce back boilers for those situations which meet the criteria given in Guide to the Condensing Boiler Installation Assessment Procedure for Dwellings.

Maybe thats why there in trouble! Making back boilers that no one is buying!
Haven't seen a new back boiler since about 2003. Also not come across a situation where someone would qualify for a new BBU.
