replacing old down lighters

To replace ugly old downlighters with something modern, does this require the services of an electrician?
 
Not from a legal point of view. But there are a lot of technical pitfalls if you don't know what you're doing.
 
First step will be to measure the diameter of the existing hole.

That will narrow down your search for a replacement.

Then decide what type of downlight you might have. If you are starting out fresh it works out better for your pocket -in the long term- if you go for LED lights.

240v ones not 12v.
