Existing switch has RED at the top, BLACK at the bottom (only has 2 connections) and the backplate has an earth terminal to which the earth is presently connected.

New switch as 3 terminals. COM, L1 and L2.

What colour goes to COM, to L1, to L2?

One of them to COM, the other to L1 - it doesn't matter which way round, although it would be better to have the red to COM, because that's the way it would be if it was ever converted to use two-way switching (hall/landing stylee).

And the black should really have a red sleeve on it to indicate that it's Switched Live, not Neutral.

Cheers,

Howard

Thank you HDRW.

So, it is:

RED to COM,
BLACK with a red sleeve to L1,

The EARTH (with a yellow/green sleeve) to the EARTH terminal?

I'll be much obliged if you would confirm this, thanks.

Yup, that's it!

Thank you very much Howard.

First time 'play' with electrics without help; so I am a little apprehensive.

PS: Your signature message/statement is frightenning! It is stated in jest, isn't?
