Repointing a brick wall

A small part of wall needs repointing. It's not a big enough job to interest a tradesman. Do you think a complete novice such as me can do it myself with with ready mixed mortar from a hardware store? I have watched a tradesman on utube demonstrate how to do it.

stand back and pic and post the whole base elevation of that wall.
to re-point you first have to rake out the beds and perps for a say 20mm depth - and only then re-point with, in your case, a 3:1 sand and lime mix.
take care not to damage the DPC material.
the shallow smears of sand and cement mortar you show have been absorbing water, freezing, expanding and blowing off.
