Another question: It's only a small kitchen but would it be normal practice to put it on it's own ring main nowadays.

Some people would without any consideration. Usually the same ones that fit rings for upstairs, downstairs and a garage with 2 sockets in it.

There are circumstances where a ring circuit might be a decent choice.
Other circuit designs are available. Including for rooms that are not kitchens.

From what you've just said I think you'd be horrified to find out how barely-qualified and inexperienced you can be and join NICEIC....

In fairness that isn't true of the Approved Contractor Scheme.
