Its much better to have too many sockets in a room, especially a kitchen where you need to look ahead at appliances you may get in the future, than to find at a later date you need to run things off extension leads. Whiklst in the kitchen, have your appliance sockets below the worktops but controlled by switches above the worktop. Also have adequate sockets above the worktop for small appliances, (kettle, toaster, percolator etc), and have a similar number on the opposite walls. The kitchen should also be on its own circuit rather than in with the rest of the down stairs sockets so that if something trips out you can use power from here to supply lamps and tools to carry out repairs.
