Hi,Have got into building my own rocket motor and need to make e-matches as i need to set the igniter deep inside the motor, i have tried two 9v batteries in parallel, 30ft of speaker wire, one strand i would say is copper, the other maybe chromed/nickel plated wire ?

At the business end, 60 awg nichrome wire, sat on a match head, dipped in cellulose, then dipped in magnesium powder. When i try to ignite a match, at the most i bet the tiniest whisp of smoke but no ignition, when i put the e match to the battery with only 3 inch of wire, it lights immediately, is the copper wire i'm using too high a resistance? Apart from using a car battery, what else do i do ?, thanks......

Ye gods :D
1) How about a spark igniter from a kitchen gas hob?
2) Some older gas cookers had a glowing wire igniter for their grill.....only a couple of the U2 type batteries if I recall, and the wire was a fixed resistance material called constantan.
John :)

but bear in mind the hazards of electrical ignition

i need to set the igniter deep inside the motor,
this can create the situation where the rocket is "tethered" by the cable going deep into the motor.

Use paper soaked in s strong solution of potassium nitrate and then dried ( careful, it ignites easily ). Roll a piece into a tube long enough to reach deep into the motor Wrap one end of tube with a spiral of thin copper wire. Connect the ends of the thin wire to a pair of wire tails which can then b connected to the firing lead.

Now I'm really puzzled. 'Cos playing with rocketry & the associated physics, is a large part of what the internets was invented for.

Yet you choose to ask this Qu' on Diynot?

Does anyone else get the impression that there is a need to drum up traffic just for the sake of drumming up traffic?

Speaker wire is all copper afaik, just plated differently so you can tell which wire's which.
It sounds like you're losing too much voltage in long wires. Yoo need a multimeter to measure it. A cheapie would do.
