You'd be wise to consider using a horizontal pattern rather than a vertical for better support. Stone would be a more suitable material, giving extra strength. I know it'd be expensive in the short term but consider how long the wood has lasted before you need to replace those sleepers and stack it up against the additional cost of replacing them again in the long term rather than using stone that wouldn't need replacing at all.
