While I was away soaking up the atmosphere of Glastonbury next weekend we had some guys in doing work. They came recommended from my brother in Law (you can see where this might be going). We had taken down a wall between kitchen and didning areas, putting in a steel.

The steel span is 3300mm and the beam is S355 of size UB1528916. Part of the beam is supporting a bathroom wall above. The gap between th top of the beam and the wall seems to have been made up with block of wood and not slate or steel as I would have thought.

Wall above is 2220mm x 2300mm brick construction with plastered finish both sides.

I am being old to relax but cant help think that this is not as it should be. I was assured that calcs were done but the dimensions of the beam and particularly the use of wooden infill chocs has left me feeling less than assured. Thankfully my money is still in my pocket!.

Any advice, always welcome!

Wooden infill between a beam and a masonry wall isnt advisable as it can compress over time creating cracks in the wall.

Is the steel beam taking any floor loading?

Also be wary that the grade of the beam specified is S355 which is not the standard grade of steel (higher grade)..

Any chance of some photos?
