RSJ sizing

Using professionals such as structural engineers, surveyors, architects etc, is more than just a signature.

They are prepared to underwrite the project assuming liability via insurances......provided their instructions are carried out to the letter, of course!

so would you take structural advise on a forum..... hence.. ignore..

There is nothing to be lost from using a forum to compare information.

Likewise, there is no proof that any communications with any structural engineers, be it over the phone, e-mail, etc is any guarantee that said s.e. is genuine.

Only a fool would plow ahead without written/drawn documents by a qualified s.e.

As said previously, no harm in using a forum as a comparison or to simply corroborate what an s.e. may already have stated.

Quit being so uptight Grrrrrraint. :p

how can you compare when the information is from a forum.. surely structurally you should and have to have a professional verdict.....

we can all look and say that that size would hold the street up.... but someone on here , with the wrong person informing, would believe....

If you are so naive as to not recognise the wheat from the chaff then you are not fit to type.

Your whole ethos as to "a professional verdict" applies to the entire forum and the entire Internet for that matter. The advice people seek here is subjective and those seeking it make up their own minds.

Are you saying DIYnot should be shut down Grrrraint?

surely structurally you should and have to have a professional verdict.....

Professional verdicts are given out here on a daily basis, several opinions are better than one.
The advice on this site has saved many people grief and money, when they have taken 'real world' advice from so called 'professionals'.

Thanks guys.

I have an SE coming next Monday. He's a friend of a friend so hopefully he won't lift my leg ;)

the ethos of a professional man i.e. a structural engineer is not based on a forum... he could advise... but when he does and joe blogs takes his advice... and it fails..... who is the faster runner.....
