If a ring main cable is clipped to a blockwork wall (vertical), do the new regs specify that you have to use PVC Channel or Conduit or can you just clip it to the wall using cable clips at the regs specified distance and then plaster over?
The PVC channel "Screwfix code 31046" does not seem to offer any protection and does not allow for cables to be pulled through. Except for possible regs, I can't see the point...

(sorting out my screwfix order)
many thanks in advance for your comments,
Alex.

What new regs are these?

And no protection is neccessary when cables are run within a safe zone, however you may consider capping or conduit to prevent damage by a clumsy plasterer with his trowel edge, and lso to allow cables to be withdrawn and replaced

just talking about Part P. (I guess the new has worn off)
Thanks for your comments Adam, I had not thought about damage that could be caused by the plastering its self.

Part P actually says very little, it just requires suitable provisions to be made against risk of fire or shock and thats it :) The easiest way to meet this is to install to BS7671 (the wiring regs) and the 16th eddition has been in use since 1992 (albeit with some minor alterations re: colours more recently)

Its a common misconception that part P says use capping here... don't run cables here, etc, etc

My I recommend the onsite guide, its a reference /extract of the most commonly used looked up parts of the regs with advice on interpreting them as well, £17 from the IEE, also whitfields guide here: http://www.tlc-direct.co.uk/Book/1.1.htm is a more in 'friendly' discussion of some of the stuff
