Running!

I break into a sweat at the prospect of running a bath, never mind a marathon

As suggested, pace yourself on the treadmill, work out general pace, and take it easy, just because you might feel like you are going backwards at the start, with loads overtaking you, pace yourself, know your limits, and make sure, on the day, a good warming up session before the start, stretch everything, eat lots of carbs, in the build up, know your limits.

When I did a mini marathon, was totally unprepared, got a stitch on the first bend, you get them through bad pace, or gait? Ouch!

And if you get new trainers, make sure they are broken in, otherwise you will get blisters, good luck, you should get people on here to sponser you, what charity are you running for?

EFC - you're probably right - i've been on my first run tonight, did 1k and it was harder than I thought it would be, could have run on (a bit), but i got home (ran home from a friends house!!). Did run it way too fast too - 3mins20sec -need to work on my pacing!!!

Pool at a gym is no carrot for me, a) i can't swim and b) i've no interest in learning - i have a fear of getting water on my face!!

Will have a look at the options i've got locally re. the gym, but i've got no spare case each month at the mo - that's why I said I couldn't afford it!! But you're right, I shouldn't make a decision without doing a little research.

Secure - New Mills, Whaley Bridge and Macclesfield eh... lucky you!! We live near Buxton.

Squeaky - I know where you're coming from - I remember 'nipple rub' from cold games lessons at school!!

Micky - yeah - running a bath is the most running i've done for a few years!! I'm getting sponsored for 'The Children's Hospital Charity, Sheffield' We've spent a lot of time there with our 5yr old son in the past 3 years - there's little worse than one of your children being ill or needing medical attention and whilst our son's condition isn't partiularly serious (at the moment, fingers crossed it stays that way!), we've seen children in all kinds of conditions so I wanted to raise some money for the work they do there.

Not really a swimmer myself, and to be honest I don't think its swimming that is KEY to rejuvenating muscles after a run, I think it is back and forward from the steam room/sauna into the pool from hot to cold then to hot then to cold, majority of the time I never even swam 1 length in the pool

Private gym's offer a 1 day trial to see if you like it, if you have 5 different private gym's in your area that's 5 days in the gym, haha all for free, that will tell you if the treadmill/pool/sauna will work for you

Hi guys, Thanks once again for all the advice. Second training run went better than the first - 1.2km in around 8mins - a much better pace - and once i've mastered the hill - it'll be easier and easier!!

Hi Norcon,

Definately can't afford one of those!! And haven't the room to put one either! I'm happy enough out in the fresh air - i've got the scenery here that i don't appreciate enough so its a good excuse to get out and make the most of it!!

My mum has got some sort of exercise machine - might have to have a go on that when i call to see her!! Every little helps!!

I have the Andes 150. A quick google and hey presto..

Edit. Link removed as it was freezing.
Anyways ebay is probably full of them for less than a hundred quid and you would soon run that up driving too a gym .

Its hardly big enough though on friction for what you're doing. I think the next one up in size is the Andes 200.

wreckedit - walked approximately 9km at the beginning of May and 6-7km in Mid-May. Do quite a bit of walking, but never really bother to work out how far i've walked?

Norcon - ha, ha! I can bear water on my face while i'm washing, but get me in a swimming pool or in the sea and if the water level comes near my face I start panicking, take a big intake of air (which is mostly water, not air) and that's me done!! I think it comes from my father who can swim a bit, but swims almost vertically so his face is well out of the water - you have to see it to believe it!!

Secures - is that Dove Holes: voted the UKs ugliest village on Radio 5 a few years back!!??!! We don't live there, but know some people who do. Its not all that bad in all honesty.

you can get iPod / iPhone apps/podcasts called Couch 2 5K (often refered to as C25K ) that are interval training and tell you when to walk and when to run etc and builds you up to running 5k over the period of several weeks..
there are also couch 2 10K and bridge ones ( that take you from 5K to 10K )..

might be worth a look.?

Thanks for that Coljack - might have a look at those and see if they'll help me.

I'm doing quite well up to now though - less than three weeks since my first run of more than 200m in over 6 years and after finding that first 1km run extremely difficult, I ran 3.2km relatively easily yesterday and at a pretty good pace too! My biggest problem is running down hill - from home i've got a steepish hill no matter which way i run - running up is hard, but getting easier, running down the steep bits its even worse though - hurts my knees!

Anyone got any tips for techniques for running downhill? Would I be better to just let the hill decide my pace (ie speed up) rather than trying to hold myself back to keep to my running pace?
