Hi, just bought a new towel radiator and it seems very rusty inside – is this normal?
Also, having taken off the old radiator the water was very black – what does this mean?

I think its just water left in after testing, i wouldnt worry.

As for the black water, was it like a thick sludge ?.

Yes it is normal with some cheap towel rails. They are tested with water and the water remaining inside afterwards causes this rusting.

Black sludge is also common in CH systems. It's a different type of rust (formed when there isn't so much oxygen available). You might need to flush out your system and add inhibitor. See FAQ section for more on this.

thanks for the advice!
and no, it's not a thick sludge at all...

As well as draining all the black water from the system I would advise adding sentinel X400 and leaving it there for four weeks before draining again and adding X100 inhibitor.

If you have most types of combi boiler then its almost essential for you to do that to avoid problems in the future. If its an older system boiler then its not really essential but still a good idea.
