I wouldn't want to sail that single handed. How many crew? 1000?, Must have been a great life at times, do you miss it?

The only combat I saw on my vessel was on a 24hr trip from Wales down to Padstow and waking up from a 2hr rest to see the missus sitting by the tiller snoring like a bastard, said she was just 'resting her eyes', if I'd had a plank, she would have walked it.
1200 crew with the squadrons onboard about 960 without. I was onboard ‘86 to ‘89 and had numerous “incidents” including aircraft lifts failing and the infamous gearbox fire. I had just come off watch when the alarms went off. There were no Harriers onboard as far as I remember and no casualties were flown off so Wiki is wrong on that score. In fact I spoke to the two guys who were closest to the fire with a minute of them getting out of the compartment. One was just leaving the gear room and one was just going in, he stood back to let the other guy out of the hatch as the gearbox exploded. The senior guy had the sense of mind to drop the hatch and contain the fire.I wouldn't want to sail that single handed. How many crew? 1000?, Must have been a great life at times, do you miss it?
