Hi All,

Going to be sprucing up the house and need to fill cracks and repaint ceilings and walls. Am I best to sand down all surfaces before painting and if so, are there any poles and discs worth getting for DIY'ers / ones to avoid. What grit of sandpaper and would I sand down lightly before the final coat?

Cheers
Daz

Cheap orbital sander from DIY store.
120 grade sanding disc
Bodge sander on a hepa banged vacuum..

I used a power performance sander on a Henry vac for years.
I screwed and silicone waste pipe on sander exhaust. Couldn't kill that sander. Ha.

Loads on YouTube on bodging up hose.
Longer hose available and I used to join them

I have pro stuff now

If you are repainting emulsion, you don't need to sand it unless you plan to sand away imperfections. Assuming that there are no smokers and the walls are not covered in grease, in most cases you can simply emulsion over them.

Like @Wayners , I am a decorator. I tend to sand walls before recoating, but that is often to remove the texture rather than being necessary with regards to adhesion.

When I first started decorating, I had a Numatic (they additionally make the Henry) vacuum connected to a Atlas Copco sander (VSSE220E). In those days, the bags were paper and often split.

Cost wise, if you are willing to use elbow power, the Mirka "handy sanders" which connect to vacuum cleaners are really good value.

I was thinking I was going overboard with this as I'm more used to slapping on two coats of paint on the walls and ceiling!
