Hello all -any advice is welcome. As all of the sash's in my flat won't stay put. The bottom ones won't stay up, and the uppers just sink all the way down. Funny thing is, they all seem to have the weights attached as they can be felt at the end of the cords, and can be heard rattling about inside. Could it be that all weights are wrong?

Many thanks for reading

wrong now , yes - and assuming it`s a old building - probably caused by re glazing after the Blitz , with thicker glass  just get some small rubber wedges to hold them

Sometimes more than one weight is used and they can drop off, or glass is damaged and replaced with a thicker pane [more weight].

I think i'll have a go at fixing them. Heavier weights needed I s'pose..

you might just be able to add some more weight to the cord(inside the box)either by buying some lead made for this purpose or wrap some strips of lead round the cord yourself.

but if your cords are shot/old then replace them.

wonder if the weights have been reversed causing the lighter top windows to stay up and the heavier lower to lower
its a strange one really as i would expect the friction to overcome the few ounces of difference

Oops, been there done that - you read the OP's post incorrectly

Just not enough weight on the ends of the cords for what ever reason (and a few good ones posted above). If you can still get access, re-attach any that have fallen off and add until friction reliably holds the sash as big-all has indicated. Check weighted cords are attached both sides just in case one side is missing.

nowt unusual there then :D :D :D

the weight really need to be well mixed up to cause such an imballance
so suspect weights imported from somewhere else plus additional weight alteration to the windows with no regards to the actual weight causing the imballance
