Hi,

I've been having a problem with the above boiler. It started making a horrific "aircraft taking off" noise. It also starting leaking water. British Gas visited this morning and basically said that the pump had broken (hence the noise) and that the valves were faulty (hence the leak). He said that given the age of the boiler (approx 13yrs) I would be better off getting a new boiler rather than trying to repair it.

Before he left, he fiddled with a tap below the boiler to increase the pressure. It still made a pretty horrific noise and he said that the pump had been burnt dry. However, I have come home from work, have turned it on and it now appears to be working ok and there is no noise at all. However, it is still leaking.

I have had some quotes for a new combi (all around the £1500 mark). However, now that the noise is gone and I'm just left with a leak, I'm wondering whether I actually need a new boiler or whether this one can in fact be patched up for the time being?

Sorry for being a bit vague and thanks in advance.

Thanks. There are three copper looking pipes. The middle one is dripping from the nut. Does this help at all?

Under the boiler, dripping straight onto the kitchen surface. I think I'm starting to convince myself that it is not dripping anywhere near as much as it was this morning!

Obviously don't want to have a new boiler fitted (especially just after xmas) if the old one can limp on for a bit longer yet. Also a bit concerned that the BG engineer told me it was defo knackered and less than 12 hours later it seems to be relatively ok!

British gas new boiler policy. Is the leak from a heating pipe (22mm) or dhw pipe (15mm)? Maybe the compression fittings are just loose. May need removing, checking and making good.

Many thanks for this. Have just tightened the offending nut and leak seems to have stopped. Thid now seems obvious, although I made the mistake of taking BG's advice at face value. Am becoming increasingly annoyed with BG. They told me this morning that it was dead and now it seems to be working fine. I appreciate that it is coming to the end of its life, but they didn't even make an effort to get it up and running so that I had heating. So many thanks for your help.

With reference to the noise which BG says was the pump, is there a logical explanation as to why it now appears to be working fine and without making a noise?

Thanks for all your help, really appreciated.
