Stripped paper and wall was rough as anything, have filled holes and the areas where the layers of old emulsion has come away and sanded, will be putting up 1700 lining paper and painting and it is paste the paper not the wall stuff.
Question is before i size the wall should i put a dilute coat of emulsion over to minimize the filler sucking the paste and if so should i use vinyl silk or a matt?

The size should be fine (btw the way I am a decorator).

To be honest, most of the time, I roll a full fat coat of powdered based paste on the wall and then paste the paper with the same paste. I do a few drops at the same time to ensure that even on hot days the wall will be wet even if the paper has started to dry.

I only deviate from that when working on old lime plaster walls, the reason being that the micro hairline cracks might have bits of grit. I allow the paste you dry and then lightly run sandpaper over the wall to dislodge any grit.

Use thicker lining paper. I used Wickes Erfurt 2200 grade and it went onto the dry wall smooth and hid the imperfections. Use with Solvite all purpose paste Wickes code 145084. Very impressive for the extra cost. No need to prepare wall.

Thank You blup,
Already have the paper which is Erfurt Mav so will carry on, it is going to be matt paint so that will minimise anything showing but will bear in mind the 2200 paper.
