After all that the decking is done and I need to build a retaining wall using scaffolding boards just to neaten the area I will sand the boards and use external varnish. I intend using 75x75mfence posts about a metre apart.
what do you guys think the reason i am not using sleepers is beacause of the cost and not using concrete blocks is because i have no bricklaying experience at all..

I'm not sure how long that varnish will last under those circumstances - you would be better off treating the scaffold boards with preservative and then finish them using either a fence and shed paint, or a Swedish-type wood paint like Sadolin.

But why not try a block wall? - I am no bricklayer either and my first attempt was solid and quite acceptable. Nowadays you can follow videos on Youtube and see exactly how it it is done - and if it looks unsightly, you can render it with a rough coat of cement and sand (which also isn't difficult, and there again watch it done first on a video).
