Its certainly easy to see, as its the one driven by the crankshaft pulley, that also turns the alternator.
The thing is, the Transporter had dozens of engines fitted, both diesel and petrol and the belt was usually tensioned by moving the alternator.

OK...I've tightened the belt to max and the noise is still there.
The steering fluid is full.
Any more ideas please ?
Thanks.

When you say" I've tightened the belt to max " do you mean the adjustment
travel is at it's maximum or the belt is as tight as you can pull it ?

If it is the adjustment movement is at it's maximum, then your belt is stretched beyond adjustment and you will need a new one.

If it's a "V" belt it could be the belt is bottoming on one of the pulleys, check for a shiny surface on the bottom of the groove of each pulley.

;)

Good post jonny
If the belt adjustment is at its maximum, then the belt has had it (or it was the wrong one in the first place).

I have moved the alternator as far as it will go on the adjusting slide bar and the belt is now taught.
Thanks

I have taken off the V belt and it does look shiny metalic around the sides so i will get a new belt tomorrow.
thanks.
