I removed old plasterboard from one wall to lay new boards for tiling that is using metal C studs. I’m mostly re-using the screws that I took out. They are not self tapping so I have a metal thread tapping drill bit that taps a slightly smaller hole then I hand screw those old screws back in and they go in and tighten quite well. I’m a bit short on screws so need some more. I did just try to put a regular screw in but maybe it was too thick but although it went in, it doesn’t seem to tighten up as nicely as the others to the extent that it I tighten it too much it starts spinning.

So I’m thinking do I need specific type of screw?

Some metal studs you just use standard drywall screws. They just go in.
You can also get drywall screws with a drill end on
