Screws for skirts?

Obviously I would imagine this will vary depending on the wall but what would be a standard screw size for fixing skirting boards to a house?

2" x 10's or 3" x 10s depending on the type of wall.

I'll be going through plaster into some wood batens where they haven't came off. The rest will be going into thermalite bricks

In thermolite use plugs that twist or they will pull out easily.

In my experience I glued and nailed, punched the nails in and filled, does that make me a bad person?
