Sealing before lining paper?

I've stripped various papers off the walls in the rooms in our house (sometimes up to 5 layers!). Up until now, after preparation (lots of filling/sanding , as there were so many nails in the old plaster that had blown etc), I had sealed with PVA before putting on lining paper. I've found that if I just 'sized' before papering, sometimes the wall would suck in the paste, and the paper dry out too quickly and 'bubble'..

However, having had recent problems with PVA, is it OK to do it this way, or is there a better way to 'seal' the walls?

cheers.

It all depends on how many different surface coatings or non-coatings are on the same one wall. However, what to do is, on your NEW filler bits apply PVA 1/5 WATER, then apply thin paste on ALL walls and allow to dry. Thats your walls ready for hanging wallcovering.

The walls have been taken back to the plaster, but I have had to do so much filling that most of that plaster is now covered!..That's why I was using PVA (5.1) over the whole surface..

PVA shouldnt hurt..give it two thin coats, as Turdseye says 1:5 ratio..maybe the reason it was still soaking in was because you hadnt let the paste dry enough

You can also buy 'glue size'...which IMO is a bit better than using paste or PVA look around in hardware shops etc.

Dont forget, you can add a cupfull of emulsion to your size, paste or PVA it helps you see where you have been.

Very old practice...I think it was called 'clarcolle' which is some sort of french.
