Hi

We are currently in process of applying for planning permission for a first-storey extension above existing side extension. Now, there is a conservatory in the house, which was built in 2002 and does not conform (my educated guess) with the current building control regulations - no doors between house and the conservatory, central heating radiator in the conservatory.

My question is, will the building control appointed for the second storey extension, require us to make the conservatory to conform the standards? I know when a friend of mine did loft conversion, BC required him to put fire doors everywhere in the house, but how far can they go in requesting the conformity for the other parts of the house? Thanks.

I doubt they'd be bothered. Besides, they know you'd just take them away again as soon as they'd gone

Thank you. I just called the council BC surveyor and he said they would not be bothered as this is an existing situation. As of my example with fire doors, he said this was a specific requirements for loft conversions, not that they check each and every corner of the house.

I love forums and communities, but sometimes it occurs to me that it may be simple to get the information firsthand! :)

The inspectors wont (are not allowed to) go mooching around the house for non-compliant things.

You friends loft work involves fire doors on the escape route, so thats directly related the loft converion inspections
