I'm running a GCH system in it. I'm going to use the pipe securing clips with nails every 3 or 4 joists when running over. How about running alongside joists? Do I need to support the pipe or can it just rest on the plasterbaord of the downstairs ceiling?

Clip the pipes to the side of the joists when running in the same direction.

I think you might need to clip more than once every 3 or 4 joists! I recently did some work under the suspended ground floor of a house I semi-renovated a couple of years back, part of that work being the installation of central heating. I clipped the (plastic barrier) pipework at every single joist, and it has still sagged a little. If there's anything on show then I would suggest using copper.
