Security against burglaries

Thanks for the explanation gazman. I'm happy to go with the ABD lock. Regarding the laminated glass though, the french/patio doors in the house don't have one full glass, but small squares like this:-

So would this be a lot more expensive to replace?

It depends on what the squares are?
Lead or Georgian bars inside the glass would be about an extra £30 per pane.
Would you want to replace the squares? Personally I always think they make a room look a bit like a prison and prefer plain glass. Although there are some properties that it does really suit.

Most likely to be one big pane with the separators being just a framework between the inner and outer panes
Can someone recommend security bolts for UPVC French doors that don't look unsightly ?

I think Daveheens is correct in saying that the squares are just separators in the framework. I don't mind getting rid of or keeping them, so long as I get the laminate glass solution for the cheapest possible price.

Okay homemove, are you going to be in a high crime area, somewhat paranoid, or just being extra cautious. Most burglars are opportunist, and normally live a few doors away from you, so an alarm going off will send them running. Windows left open are an invitation, and grilles are usually for expensive London properties, not the suburbs.

Most break ins at night, are from magnets on the end of a long pole pushed through the letter box to pick up the keys left by the front door - and this is normally just to drive the car away.

As long as you change the locks to ABS high security type, I wouldn't worry about removing the outside handles. Make sure your alarm is set up properly, so that you can set the alarm for perimeter protection when you go to bed, and make sure you have vibration sensors on the doors and windows, and glass break detectors in each of the downstairs rooms, then you should be fine.

The only other option to consider, is to fit glass laminate safety film to your windows. Much easier than replacing them. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/3m-Glass-...ty-Window-Self-Adhesive-Vinyl-/190704693490?_
