Security light with 10% constant dimmer

Hi

I am looking to put an outside security light up. Have found one with a 180 degree detection angle which I like. Anyway, I have seen one which has a constant dimmed operation, variable from 10 - 60% output. The light 150w.

The manual says "this unit suitable for connection to a 240v 50Hz electricity supply" It suggests 3 core flexible cable. Is this a normal plug socket? I was going to install a junction box into the lighting circuit which feeds the shaver socket in the bathroom and take a spur from there to feed the light. Am I ok to do this based on the above statement in the manual?

Can you access your ring main? If so fused spur from RM to a switch then supply your external light.

I personally would also install an external junction box outside as this would allow you to add further lights later.

In an ideal world I would be looking to bring directly from CU to avoid any problems.

If in doubt call a sparks it saves heartache in the lng run

Thanks for repling. Are you saying inserting a junction box into the feed which serves the shaver socket is a cowboy thing to do? If so, I asked this question the other week and it seemed to be acceptable then.

I did ring a sparkie for a quote to fit the light and also fit some recessed bathroom lights in a main bathroom and an en-suite and he basically couldn't be bothered driving 8 miles, said the job is too small!

I am in Morley Leeds, I see you are from Bradford. Are you a sparkie - fancy a couple of hours work in sunny Morley?

I dont see how supplying a light from a lighting circuit is cowboy-ish.

Seems reasonable to me


Why install an external jointbox? All this is is an unnessacary joint to go wrong or fill with water.

A dedicated radial for a single external light is completely overkill.


@ OP, Will the junction box be in the loft, and remain accesible?

You shouldn't supply the light directly in T&E, as sunlight will damage the PVC insulation. Some flex will be fine.

RF Lighting - thanks for replying.

I was going to insert a junction box in the loft on the cable that goes to the shaver socket in the bathroom, then run a spur directly outside to the external light.

In terms of cable - I was going to use 1.5mm twin and earth cable. Is this correct? You say use flex - what sort / size?

twin and earth is not desigend for outside use (the weather) use arctic blue flex 1 mm or 1.5mm

although not required i would fit an FCU that way of light gives up you can isolate just the light and if it gets wet in theory the fcu fuse should go and leave the house lights still on
